Hot Water Healing at Sky Valley
Restoration Awaits in the Mineral Springs
The hot water for all of our resort’s 13 pools and tubs comes from natural hot springs, which erupt from the earth below us at constant temperatures between 115 and 146 degrees Fahrenheit. Naturally infused with healing minerals, this water is part of an ideal treatment for a number of health ailments.
Hydrotherapy has been used for centuries in China, India and Egypt to treat stress, back pain, arthritis and sore muscles. In the modern era of medicine, we know that hot water creates increased blood flow, which is the heart’s way to cool the body down. Along the way, that blood flow detoxifies the body and strengthens the heart.
Today, scientific studies link hydrotherapy to effective treatment plans for modern problems such as weight control, heart failure and insomnia. By incorporating our easy spa method into your routine, you’ll not only enjoy a relaxing hour in the desert air at our beautiful resort, but you can soak in the health benefits, too.
Take the Plunge
Your Daily Spa Routine
Make the Sky Valley Spa Method a part of your daily routine. Start with a 15-minute detoxifying dip in our 104-degree tub, then relax in a warm pool or sauna for an additional 30 minutes. Finally, cool down with a massaging shower for 5 minutes.
Exercise for Every Skill Level
Water exercise is an easy way for those suffering from joint pain to keep up a fitness routine. By mixing hot springs water with cooler purified water, our recreational pool remains at a constant 90 degrees, a comfortable temperature for active aquatics.
Using guidelines from the Arthritis Foundation Aquatics program, our resorts deliver dynamic aerobics programs in the shallow end of the pools several times a week, at no cost to guests. Join the 30 - 45 minute routine to find a painless way to work out!
Our popular water ball program brings a more competitive edge to the pool with a fun and challenging crossover between water polo and volleyball. Players stand in shallow water, with a net between teams, attempting to keep the ball airborne on both sides.
Call the activities department for information on all group aquatics activities.
How Hot Springs Heal
Arthritis and back pain are caused by tension between bone and muscle. Heat allows blood vessels to dilate, which in turn releases muscles, easing stress. In 2012, the US National Library of Medicine compiled all the studies that have been done on hydrotherapy as treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, and found overwhelmingly favorable outcomes. Patients using hydrotherapy treatment reported reduced pain and tension symptoms, as well as increased grip strength and an elevated mood.
Heart disease and diabetes are two of America’s deadliest killers. According to studies from Loma Linda University's Physical Therapy department, the European Journal of Heart Failure, Harvard’s medical journal and an extensive study in the journal Clinics, hot water can help. Combining a low-stress heart workout and hydrotherapy treatment with a healthy diet and exercise can improve heart health, which also reduces the risk of diabetes.
Weight loss regimes may receive an extra boost from hydrotherapy, too. Researchers from Experimental Biology and Medicine studied these effects over a twelve-week period. In their study, patients who coupled hydrotherapy with a healthy diet lost three pounds over two weeks, and an average of 30 pounds over the next 10 weeks of the study.
Insomnia affects millions of people each year, the National Sleep Foundation reports. The additional energy exerted by increased blood flow during hydrotherapy stimulates nerves and relieves tension, alleviating the restlessness than causes insomnia.
Reports on the benefits of hydrotherapy extend beyond these studies, though. In general, the practice strengthens the immune system, and aids in relieving vertigo, intestinal pain and headaches. It can also help with bronchial asthma, diseases that weaken circulation, spinal disease, multiple sclerosis, appetite loss, premenstrual syndrome, hemorrhoids, low blood pressure and varicose veins.
